Moving From New York to Boston, Philadelphia or Virginia
November 02, 2026

These are short-haul interstate moves: New York to Philadelphia is about 95 to 100 miles, to Boston about 215, and to Virginia about 230 to 380. They cross state lines, so they’re priced as interstate moves, but a shorter distance can mean a lower price than the national figures or a higher one, depending on access, stairs and your date.

How a short interstate move is priced

Nationally, a typical interstate move we priced cost $4,175 for a studio or 1-bedroom, $4,981 for 2 bedrooms, $7,520 for 3 bedrooms and $12,500 for 4 or more bedrooms.

Home size Typical price (national) Usual range
Studio / 1 bedroom$4,175$3,650 – $4,950
2 bedrooms$4,981$4,415 – $5,797
3 bedrooms$7,520$6,605 – $8,930
4+ bedrooms$12,500$10,395 – $15,735

Source: based on interstate moves we priced from January to mid-July 2026. These are national figures for all interstate routes, not a price for this route alone. A typical price means half of the moves we priced came in lower and half came in higher.

A shorter move can price below these figures or above them, depending on access, stairs and your date. Your binding quote comes after a video walkthrough.

The three routes

When to book

In moves customers booked with us, June is the busiest month at about 14% of the year’s moves, February the quietest at about 5%, about 29% of moves land in the last week of the month, and summer moves cost about 19.5% more than off-season moves. The typical customer books 34 days ahead. Our guidance is 30 to 45 days if you’re selling a home, 3 to 4 weeks if you rent, and more notice for June or month-end dates. The 8th through the 20th is usually easiest.

New York customers book about 40 days ahead. Because lease dates drive the last week of the month, a mid-month date gives you more choice of dates and arrival times.

Access matters more on a short move

On a shorter move, the details at each address can change the price more than the distance. Show stairs, elevators, long carries and tight streets on your video walkthrough. A long-distance truck is an 18-wheeler about 70 feet long, so a narrow block may need a shuttle. Check your address with our shuttle checker.

When a short move still calls for full-service movers

A 100 to 380 mile move is short enough to tempt a rental truck. Before you decide, add up the real cost: the rental rate, fuel, tolls, equipment, parking permits, help loading and unloading, and a day or two off work. For a larger home, a long carry or a walk-up, full-service often makes sense. Our moving cost calculator shows the rent-it-yourself total next to the cost of movers, and movers vs PODS vs U-Haul lays out the options.

Pick your day carefully

Monday is the most common moving day, at about 1 in 5 moves in our booked data. If you can choose, another weekday means less competition for crews. Month-end is the busiest period, so a mid-month date between the 8th and the 20th is usually easier.

A New York building checklist

  • Reserve the freight elevator early.
  • Ask whether your building requires proof of insurance from movers.
  • Arrange curb access or a loading zone, and show the block on your video walkthrough.

A simple timeline

  • 6 weeks out: quotes, date range and building rules.
  • 3 to 4 weeks out: video walkthrough and booking.
  • Last 2 weeks: confirm windows, elevators and parking on both ends, and pack an essentials bag.

Know your paperwork before pickup

A shorter move is still an interstate move, and the same paperwork applies. Keep these in one folder, or on your phone, from the day you book:

  • Your binding quote. It should state the price, the services included and the inventory it’s based on.
  • The inventory. The crew lists your items at pickup. Check it before you sign, because it’s your record at delivery.
  • Pickup and delivery windows. Get them in writing, along with the crew size and what the price covers.
  • The carrier’s details. Our federal authority is USDOT 3756000 and MC 1335229; for any company, here’s how to read a DOT record.

If a mover asks you to sign a blank or incomplete form, stop and ask why. For the difference between the two kinds of estimate, read binding vs non-binding estimates.

A delivery-day checklist

In a dense city, the details at the other end matter as much as the distance. On the day, a few minutes of care protect you:

  • Be there, or send someone. Someone who can approve the inventory and direct rooms should be at the new address.
  • Clear a path. Move cars, open doors and protect floors and walls before the crew arrives.
  • Check items off the inventory as they come off the truck, and look at big pieces before they go inside.
  • Note damage on the paperwork before the crew leaves, and take photos. If something is damaged, this is what a claim looks like.
  • Do a last walk-through of the truck and every room before you sign off.
