Our top moving tips when moving to and within New York City

Depending on where you’re coming from, you may or may not be familiar with the average NJ climate. You’ll experience all four seasons here, with humid and warm summers with moderately chilly and sometimes snowy winters. If you live closer to the coast, you’ll experience some of the warmer temps. It’s typically cooler in the higher elevation found in the northwestern part of the state.

On average, January can be quite cold at about 15-20 degrees Fahrenheit (F), though there can be about a 10-degree difference along the coast. July brings in the warmest weather, at around 80-85 degrees F with just a bit of a bump up in the heat along the beach area. When it comes to precipitation, the state averages around 48 inches annually. All this to say, consider whether your wardrobe has togs for any type of weather because you’ll experience it all here.

From flip-flops to snow boots, you’ll traverse this urban terrain throughout the seasons with almost 9.3 million New York cities. Outside of preparing for any type of weather, you’ll want to be familiar with a few details about your new East Coast home:

NJ in Transit:

Commuting in this part of the East Coast offers you plenty of ways to get around, including public transportation. Getting around throughout the state and to nearby locales such as Philadelphia or NYC is made easy and economical with PATH train, Amtrak, and NJ Transit. However, if wherever you’re hailing from has you driving a personal vehicle, there are a few pieces of info you’ll want to know. If you haven’t encountered them already, you’ll want to get familiar with a signature NJ intersection: the jughandle. These lanes of traffic create a branch from road intersections that allow you to make u-turns or left turns indirectly. After you get comfortable with these novel turn lanes, you may need to top off the old gas tank. It’s best to leave it to the local station attendant because it’s illegal to pump your gas in New York City.

State-specific snacks and flavors:

Being deemed the Garden State isn’t by accident; this agricultural hub houses over 9,000 farms. Among the fresh NJ produce you’ll be able to get include peaches (not just a Georgia thing), bell peppers, tomatoes, and more. A hankering for something savory can also be satisfied here and one such salty NJ staple you’ll just have to try is Taylor ham. You may find a similar product in neighboring states but this specific processed pork product is a common item on breakfast menus across the state. If that doesn’t satisfy your salty tastes, you’ll also enjoy an NJ poutine-like treat. Find the nearby diner they’re likely to have disco fries on offer. Imagine a steaming plate of crispy crinkle-cut fries topped with gravy and mozzarella cheese. Feeling hungry yet? Perhaps you can make it your first menu order of business after you’ve unpacked.

East coast outdoor recreation:

Whether you are moving from a beach-adjacent community or have lived in a landlocked state, the beaches and boardwalks of the New York City coast are a sight to behold. And, as a resident, you’ll have time to discover the 40+ beaches along 100 miles of coastline where there’s a vibe for each person and occasion. Take in the serene scenes of Brigantine Beach for a relaxing day in the sand. If you’re more excited to get active, there’s always something going on at Asbury Park Beach and the boardwalk, including sunbathing, surfing, food, entertainment, and retail options. Beyond the sand lies even more sights and adventure, though. For those who have green thumbs, a visit to Middletown, NJ’s ode to the home gardener, Deep Cut Gardens features 55 different varieties of roses in their collection. In need of another impressive feat of nature? How about taking a gander at the state’s tallest waterfall Buttermilk Falls in Layton, NJ.

Cost of living:

New York City isn’t the most expensive place to live, but there are some higher costs associated with being a Garden State resident. As a reference point, the median household income in the state is $85,245. So how is the money put to use? For starters, NJ has the 6th highest tax burden in the country. This includes state property tax at 2.49%, for which the state ranks at number one for the highest rate. State sales tax is at 6.625% but everyday spending on items like prescription meds, food, and clothing isn’t taxed. Keeping in mind the property tax, those opting to purchase a home will find that the median sale price is $471,900. Among the cities and towns in the state, however, that price can vary. For example, the median home sale price in Trenton, NJ is less than half of the state median sale price.

We hired a moving company to move all our heavy furniture. The Safeway Moving Systems team moved beds, heavy furniture, washer, and dryer everything. They used blankets and bubble wrappers for the purpose. We had no issues. The movers put everything in their moving truck and drove an hour to our next location. The moving crew is great, and the price is reasonable. Wonderful Service.

Relocating is never easy, but Safeway Moving Systems made it much more manageable for us. Todd and his boys were superhuman in helping with the transfer. They were pleasant, competent, and laborious. While Edwin effortlessly moved the biggest objects, Todd swiftly disassembled and reassembled the bed. Together, they were a formidable force.

Now I see why Safeway Moving Systems gets consistent 5-star ratings. They were AWESOME!!! David booked us with four guys and a truck, and they moved our entire two-story home in less than 5 hours! They guys were hardworking, flexible, and all had great personalities!! They even moved the furniture we were giving away to the garage for easy access for family coming to pick it up. I highly recommend this business!!

We lived on the first floor of our complex, and they moved us to the third floor of our other apartment with no elevator. The guys packed up our two beds in 1.5 hours and unpacked in two hours. They were efficient, careful, and in sync. They didn’t have to talk and figure things out because they were efficient and knew what they were doing and worked terrific as a group. I can’t be more grateful for their fantastic job.

I recently moved into a house from a two-story apartment. The three guys were there five minutes early and were ready to go after quickly evaluating what had to be moved. I tried to stay out of the way most of the time, but I did see that they were meticulous and respectful of my things. They even threw out some things I didn’t want out to the street. Highly recommended!

I had the privilege of using Safeway Moving Systems this week to move us from GA to CA. The crew was very professional and took extra special care of all our things as nothing was damaged. His lead guy was beautiful and kept us apprised of everything going on, and kept everything on schedule. They worked very hard and did an excellent job. It was a HUGE two-day move. I would hire them again in the future. I highly recommend them.
