- Los Angeles is the top origin city on this lane, followed by San Diego and San Francisco. Greater Miami is the top destination, with Jacksonville, Fort Myers, and Winter Garden close behind.
- This corridor has two demand peaks, the national summer moving season and Florida’s fall snowbird inflow, making January through April the best value window.
- More than 200,000 Californians have moved to Florida since 2016, driven largely by no state income tax and more house per dollar.
Moving from California to Florida costs most 2-bedroom households about $6,270 and most 3-bedroom households about $9,000, based on Safeway’s own pricing file for this route from the first half of 2026. Small apartments run $4,050 to $4,950, and large homes run $12,600 to $17,300. The drive is roughly 2,700 miles, and transit takes 5 to 14 days. Safeway Moving, ranked #1 Best National Moving Company by Newsweek Readers’ Choice 2026, has its own crews at both ends of this lane, a Los Angeles location at origin and our national headquarters in Fort Lauderdale at destination.
For a coast-to-coast move, that both-ends footprint is the biggest structural advantage a mover can offer. A brokered 2,700-mile move typically changes hands mid-country; ours doesn’t change hands at all. Our Fort Lauderdale moving services team runs the destination side of this route directly from national headquarters.
What This Move Costs in 2026
Safeway’s own quote data for this corridor, January through July 2026. Where This Lane Starts and Ends
Our origin data reads like a California map: Los Angeles long-distance movers handle the largest share, about one in seven departures on this lane, then San Diego and San Francisco. Destination-side, greater Miami dominates; Miami plus Miami Beach accounted for about one in five of the Florida-bound households we priced, but the middle of the state ranks close behind. Jacksonville and Fort Myers sit just after the Miami metro in our quote activity, and in Orlando’s western suburbs, Winter Garden outdrew Orlando proper. Families priced out of coastal California are, quite literally, skipping coastal Florida too.
Our Fort Lauderdale relocation team calls this home base; HQ crews deliver into Broward daily. Comparing regions first? See our Florida moving hub for a statewide breakdown.
The Seasonal Stack on This Corridor
Two waves hit this lane: the national summer peak, June was our biggest month here, roughly three in ten of the half-year’s quote requests, and Florida’s fall snowbird inflow. Between them, January through April is the value window. Summer pricing runs 20 to 30 percent above winter industry-wide, and this corridor’s double season makes the off-peak discount bigger than on most routes.
Access: The Two Ends Are Opposite Problems
California origin is where surprises live: San Francisco hills, permit-zone streets, older buildings with no loading dock, all shuttle-truck territory that our virtual survey catches and prices before you sign. Florida delivery splits by destination: suburban Jacksonville or Fort Myers is easy trailer access, while Miami and Miami Beach high-rises mean elevator reservations and dock time limits. We quote all of it upfront; that’s what makes the flat rate flat.
Why People Make This Move?
More than 200,000 Californians have moved to Florida since 2016, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. The usual math: no state income tax versus California’s top 13.3% rate, no state estate tax, and more house per dollar in every Florida metro than in coastal California. Florida led the nation in net inbound migration again in 2024, and it was the #1 destination in our own quote book this year, nearly two households priced inbound for every one priced outbound.
Barcodes Across 2,700 Miles
Every item is barcode-labeled and scanned onto the truck at your California door by our own crew, GPS-tracked along I-10, and scanned off in Florida. The count matches, or we know what to trace immediately. On interstate moves, 30 days of included move-in storage come standard, useful on this lane, where closings and cross-country timing rarely line up perfectly.
A Cross-Country Move, Week by Week
- Four to six weeks out: virtual survey and binding quote. Our triple-check survey walks your home on camera and verifies the inventory twice; on a 2,700-mile move, the quote is only as good as the count it’s built on.
- Two weeks out: confirm dates, building requirements at both ends, and whether you’re using the included storage.
- Moving day: our California crew wraps, barcodes, and scans every item onto the truck.
- In transit: 5 to 14 days on I-10 with GPS visibility; you drive, fly, and get the keys.
- Delivery: our Florida crew scans every item off, sets furniture, and the count has to match before the job closes. Across 18,000+ moves, that is the point of the barcode system.
Advice We Give Every California to Florida Customer
Let wood furniture acclimate. Florida humidity is real, solid-wood pieces coming from California’s dry climate can swell in their first weeks, leave drawers closed for a few days and don’t force sticking doors, they usually settle.
Time your arrival around hurricane season paperwork, not hurricanes. June through November closings can hit insurance-binding pauses when a named storm is active, which delays keys, not moving trucks, another scenario where the included 30-day storage quietly saves the schedule.
Register your car early. Florida gives new residents 30 days, and the DMV appointment backlog in Miami-Dade and Broward is its own little moving project.

What our 2026 data shows for California to Florida moves
- Florida’s pull is growing again: about 63% of the Florida-related moves we priced from January to mid-July 2026 were people moving in, up 9.5 points from the same months of 2025, the first reversal in five years.
- California has more departures than any other state in our data. California to Texas is our busiest route, with about 1 in 6 departing California households Texas-bound, and about one household headed to Florida for every two headed to Texas.

Timing moves the price. Booked-move data shows summer costing about 19.5% more than off-season, June taking about 14% of the year’s moves against about 5% for February, and about 29% of moves bunching into the last week of the month. The typical booking is 34 days ahead; our advice is 30 to 45 days for sellers, 3 to 4 weeks for renters, and extra lead time for June and month-end. Mid-month, the 8th through the 20th, is usually easier.

Our quotes are binding and flat-rate after a video walkthrough, so the price holds as long as your inventory does and anything added later is priced on its own. Estimates have been recorded and checked against the final inventory since September 1, 2026, and every item is barcode-labeled and scanned at pickup and delivery. Interstate moves include 30 days of free storage (how storage in transit works). Choosing your own truck and delivery date typically adds $1,500 to $4,500 over the shared-truck window.
Two things worth checking early: whether the truck can reach your door (long-distance trucks are about 70 feet long and over 13 feet tall, so see our shuttle checker and when a moving truck needs a shuttle) and who is actually moving you (we hold our own federal authority, USDOT 3756000 and MC 1335229; read a DOT record). Federal rules also cap a non-binding estimate at 110% on delivery day (details). For a starting number, use the moving cost calculator.
