Moving from Washington to California is mostly a single long ride down I-5. Seattle to Sacramento is about 760 miles, Seattle to the Bay Area roughly 810, Seattle to Los Angeles near 1,135 and Seattle to San Diego about 1,255. Spokane and other eastern Washington origins add a few hundred miles, and the routing there may differ, depending on the load.
Pages for Florida to Seattle and New York to Seattle cover moves into the same region, and our long-distance moving service page explains how a shipment works from pickup to delivery. This guide focuses on what changes when you leave a Pacific Northwest home for a California address.
Cost of Moving from Washington to California
The cost of a Washington-to-California move depends on four primary factors: the distance between your exact origin and destination, the size of your home, the services you add (packing, storage, specialty items), and the time of year you move. Below are Safeway’s typical prices for interstate moves by home size, from our own 2026 quote data.
Typical prices for interstate moves, by home size
| Home size | Typical price (national) | Usual range |

| 2 bedrooms | $4,981 | $4,415 – $5,797 |
| 3 bedrooms | $7,520 | $6,605 – $8,930 |
| 4+ bedrooms | $12,500 | $10,395 – $15,735 |

What drives the cost up
A Tacoma-to-Sacramento load is a lot shorter than a Spokane-to-San Diego one, so exact addresses determine much of the quote. Seattle’s hills and apartment buildings can add crew time on pickup, and a California walk-up or hillside delivery can do the same on arrival. Summer, weekends and month-end dates carry a premium, packing services add to the total, and storage can cover any gap between your Washington move-out and a California lease start.

What to expect on this route?
Most Washington-to-California shipments take three to seven days. After loading around Puget Sound, the truck heads south on I-5 through Olympia, crosses the Columbia River at Portland and passes Eugene and Medford. It then climbs over the Siskiyou Summit near the Oregon-California line and runs past Mount Shasta and Redding into the Sacramento Valley. Winter snow at the Siskiyou and Shasta passes, chain requirements and late-summer wildfire smoke or closures are the most likely causes of delay. Drivers choose safe stopping points, and we share updates through real-time tracking so you always know where your belongings are.

Leaving the Puget Sound for California
Rain, hills and tight downtown streets define most Washington pickups, while California deliveries bring parking limits, heat and, in some cities, steep blocks.
Seattle, Bellevue and Tacoma pickups
Downtown Seattle, South Lake Union and Bellevue towers typically require a certificate of insurance and a reserved elevator, and Capitol Hill and Queen Anne have steep streets where a full-size truck may need a shuttle. Rain can slow loading, and tarps and floor protection are standard. Tacoma and the suburbs south of Seattle are often easier to access. Our Washington movers page covers the state, and our shuttle checker shows whether a smaller truck is likely to be needed.
Spokane and eastern Washington
Spokane origins add a few hundred miles to the trip and may be routed differently from a Puget Sound load. Winter snow over the Cascades and across eastern Washington can affect pickup dates, so a spring or fall move is usually smoother. We plan the route based on your address and the season.
Bay Area arrivals
Bay Area addresses can include steep hills, narrow one-way streets and older buildings with limited elevators. Parking permits and loading zones are common conditions. Our San Francisco movers page, Oakland movers page and San Jose movers page cover the area, and our guide to high-rise apartment moves in California helps with tower deliveries.
Sacramento and the Central Valley
Sacramento is the first big stop after the mountains, and summer afternoons there are often much hotter than in Seattle. Early-morning unloading is usually more comfortable, and the region’s mix of older tree-lined streets and newer subdivisions means access varies by address. See our Sacramento movers page.
Los Angeles and San Diego
Southern California adds roughly 400 to 500 miles beyond Sacramento, and its delivery challenges include freeway traffic, gated communities and permit parking. Our Los Angeles and San Diego pages cover local specifics, and our guide on moving into gated communities in California lists helpful questions.
Moving Your Car from Washington to California
Seattle to Sacramento is a one-day drive for many people, though most households split it into two days. California generally expects new residents to register vehicles after a set period and may require an emissions inspection, so check current DMV requirements. Washington has a mix of older and newer cars, and some households find that parking in dense California neighborhoods is a reason to bring only one.
Best Time to Move from Washington to California
Late spring and early fall are usually the most comfortable windows, since they avoid the Siskiyou and Shasta snow season and the summer heat in Sacramento and Southern California. Summer and month-end weekends are the hardest dates to book, and late-summer wildfire smoke can affect parts of I-5. Winter moves are possible but need extra schedule flexibility.
Cost of Living: Washington vs. California
Washington has no state income tax, while California taxes income at graduated rates, so compare take-home pay and not just the listed salary. Housing in the Bay Area and coastal Southern California is generally more expensive than most of Washington, while Sacramento and the Central Valley are usually more moderate. Seattle’s rainy winters give way to sunny and often hot California summers, which can change heating and cooling costs. Our Los Angeles cost of living guide is a good starting point for comparing.
What our 2026 data shows for Washington to California moves
Our booked moves show a clear calendar: June is the busiest month at about 14% of moves, February the quietest at about 5%, roughly 29% of moves cluster in the last week of the month, and summer costs about 19.5% more than the off-season. Customers typically book 34 days out. We suggest 30 to 45 days if you are selling a home, 3 to 4 weeks if you rent, and more notice for June or end-of-month dates, ideally landing between the 8th and the 20th.

What you get with a Safeway quote: a binding flat rate after a video walkthrough, with added items priced separately; a recorded estimate (since September 1, 2026) checked against the final inventory; barcode scans at pickup and delivery; and 30 days of free storage on interstate moves, explained in storage in transit. Most long-distance moves share a truck, so delivery comes in a window, and a dedicated truck with a delivery date you choose typically adds $1,500 to $4,500.
Before booking any mover, check its federal record (ours is USDOT 3756000, MC 1335229, and this guide shows how to read it) and know that on a non-binding estimate the law caps what a mover can demand at delivery at 110% of the estimate (binding vs. non-binding estimates). Our trucks are 18-wheelers about 70 feet long and over 13 feet tall, so use the shuttle checker to see whether your street needs a smaller shuttle truck (how that works), and the moving cost calculator for a first estimate.
