When to move

In moves customers booked with us, June is the busiest month at about 14% of the year’s moves, February the quietest at about 5%, about 29% of moves land in the last week of the month, and summer moves cost about 19.5% more than off-season moves. The typical customer books 34 days ahead. Our guidance is 30 to 45 days if you’re selling a home, 3 to 4 weeks if you rent, and more notice for June or month-end dates. The 8th through the 20th is usually easiest.

Texas heat can make a summer pickup uncomfortable for crews and hard on some belongings. Start early, keep heat-sensitive items such as candles, electronics and cosmetics with you, and avoid peak summer dates if you can.

California address checklist

  • Parking and access: many California cities require permits to reserve street parking for a moving truck. Ask your city early.
  • Apartments and condos: ask for elevator reservations and move-in hours.
  • Truck size: a long-distance truck is an 18-wheeler. Check your address with our shuttle checker.

Southern California vs the Bay Area: two different deliveries

Texas to California covers about 1,500 miles, but the delivery end varies a lot. In Southern California you may be dealing with large apartment complexes, gated communities and busy freeways. In the Bay Area, hills, narrow streets and older buildings can limit where the truck parks. Either way, ask your building for its moving rules, reserve elevators early, and show the street and entrance on your video walkthrough.

Packing for heat and a multi-day trip

  • Keep heat-sensitive items with you: candles, cosmetics, electronics, medications and anything that melts or warps.
  • Pack liquids carefully: tape caps, seal bottles in bags and keep them upright.
  • Protect furniture: disassemble what you can and let the crew pad the rest. For more on what long hauls do to furniture, read what happens to your furniture over 2,800 miles.
  • Keep your essentials bag: documents, chargers, a few days of clothes and anything you can’t replace.

Questions to ask your mover

  • Is the quote binding and based on a video walkthrough?
  • Is the truck shared, and what is my delivery window?
  • Who is the carrier on the paperwork? You can check with this guide to a DOT record.
  • What happens if the truck can’t reach my address?

A simple timeline

  • 6 weeks out: quotes, date range, and what you’ll sell or donate.
  • 3 to 4 weeks out: video walkthrough and booking.
  • Last 2 weeks: confirm windows, building rules and utilities in both states.

Valuables and special items

If your Texas home has larger furniture, patio sets or a full garage, check what a California home will have room for. Mention anything unusual during your video walkthrough, not on pickup day, so it’s priced and handled correctly:

  • Large or delicate pieces: pianos, glass tables, mirrors, framed art and big TVs.
  • Anything high in value: photograph it before it’s packed and keep receipts or appraisals.
  • Items you’d rather carry yourself: jewelry, documents, passports, laptops and medications ride with you.
  • Disassembly: ask which furniture the crew will take apart and which you should do yourself.

Ask what protection covers your belongings in transit and what it costs, before you sign.

Your first week after the move

California has its own rules for your license and car registration, so look them up early. A short list keeps the first week from getting away from you:

  • Unpack in priority order: beds, bathrooms, kitchen basics, then everything else.
  • Set up utilities and internet before you arrive if you can.
  • Update your address with the post office, your bank, your employer and your insurers.
  • Check your new state’s DMV rules. Each state sets its own deadlines for your license and car registration.
  • Find the basics: a doctor, a pharmacy and the nearest grocery store.
